A First-Timer's Guide to Old Dhaka
Old Dhaka isn't a place you drive through — it's a place you walk through. The lanes are too narrow, the traffic too tangled, and honestly, the best parts of Puran Dhaka only reveal themselves at walking pace: a doorway carved with Mughal-era detail, a tea stall that's been open since your grandfather's time, a courtyard you'd never notice from a car window.
Start early, before the heat and crowds build up. Lalbagh Fort is a good anchor point — unfinished, slightly mysterious, and full of quiet corners. From there, a cycle-rickshaw through the bazaars gets you closer to daily life than any guidebook route. End at Sadarghat, where the Buriganga River is at its busiest, and take a short rowing boat out to see the city from the water.
Wear shoes you don't mind getting dusty, carry cash for rickshaws and snacks, and give yourself more time than you think you need. Old Dhaka rewards travelers who slow down.
